Kaohsiung and Kenting, Taiwan: What to see and do
Second just to Taipei in the echelons of Taiwan’s largest cities, Kaohsiung is rapidly keeping pace with its counterpart in the far north as it sheds its former industrial-town husk in favour of bringing to light its more scenic scapes previously scrawled over. This comes with the aid of novel efforts in romanticising the city’s readily evident landmarks - quite literally in the case of Ai He, or Love River, which now picturesquely streams out from Kaohsiung Harbour, gently towing barges in its flow along riverside sights of alfresco cafes and a pageantry of spectral neon. This new-found affinity for the city’s previously hushed beauty however does little to detract from its industrious verve as Kaohsiung’s metropolitan remains abuzz at large thanks to the vibrant activity abound around town. The Formosa Boulevard metro station holds the fort as a central passage for daily commuters while assuming the pedestal of artistry with eye-catching flourishes of its Dome of Light ceiling mural - an artfully flashy display that resonates with the town’s widespread enamouring of visual oddities, much like the crafted curiousities that inhabit the art space along the Pier 2 Art Centre. Meanwhile, accompanying the feisty city spirit in taste are the rivalling night markets of Kaisyuan and Jin-Zuan. Both vying to secure the title of South East Asia’s largest market, the duo remains constantly lively with stalls numbering in the literal hundreds, each offering a sampling of the local flavour - ranging from pan-fried noodles, roasted and beer-battered prawns, steaks, novelty confectioneries, and more.
Further down south from the reaches of Kaohsiung’s river climes and forming the tail-end of Taiwan, Kenting provides a point of escape detached from the heavy urban ambit of its northern neighbours. Its year-round tropical climate bodes well for the mass of visitors in search of eclectic getaways amid Kenting’s climes, easily veering from familiar night market jaunts to beachfront strolls among coconut palms and burgeoning pandanus. Exemplary of this oppidan sprawl disconnect, the Kenting National Park retains its allure with a pristine tract of forested trails and peaks inhabited by a cornucopia of wildlife - with most feral figures making appearances during nighttime treks along paved paths, leading intrepid explorers into an ecosystem of coral formations, caves, and botanical sanctuaries visible from choice vantage points.
