Busan, South Korea: What to see and do

South Korea’s go-to destination for its beach getaways, Busan (or Pusan) is the country’s second largest city but its most internationally-tapped region in terms of festivals and events. Situated on the southeastern-most tip of the peninsula, the port city enjoys a cooler subtropical climate, rare snow, and mild winters that are second only to Jeju and the handful of southern coasts. The proud home of the country’s largest beach, the ‘summer capital’ of South Korea receives up to a million beach-goers at its peak season, and does sand and surf the only way a technologically-forward nation will. Equipping its stretches with sand blowers that clean your feet prior to your hotel re-entry, prepaid plastic bracelets for on-the-beach purchases, and turf walkways for the high heels-inclined, Haeundae also transforms into an art village by the sea during the Busan International Film Festival as the participants and audiences converge at the beach for bites and meet-and-greets.

Then, savour the taste of the sea as you follow the throngs of locals heading towards another of Busan’s pride, the Jagalchi Fish Market. The biggest in the country, the outdoor-and-indoor venue houses stalls that carry the essentials of fresh, dried, and pickled seafood, while reserving a space on its first floor for diners. Take your pick of the harvests sold cheaper than those served in most restaurants, and have them cleaned and cooked by your vendor, or served raw for your sashimi fix. Visit your last ‘biggest in the country’ pit stop at the Shinsegae Department Store (which is coincidentally Guinness World Records’ largest department store in the world), as you make your way to one of the three big names in South Korea’s consumer triangle. Located in Centum City, the shopping centre is comprised of ten floors of retail outlets, one specialised floor for a pampering spa, and four floors for a golf driving range.
